CPT Billing Explorer

E/M billing has real clinical judgment built in, so two careful clinicians can code slightly differently. Across a full practice panel, those subtle mix differences can add up to meaningful dollar differences.

We use the CMS Medicare Physician/Supplier utilization dataset (MUP_PHY_R25_P05_V20_D23_Prov_Svc.csv) to estimate national norms for E/M level selection patterns. In this tool, those norms come from the D23 file (calendar year 2023 Medicare claims, Jan-Dec 2023). Medicare is used here as a large, consistent national benchmark; in many cases, these coding-pattern insights can also be directionally extrapolated to commercial/private payors. Opportunity dollars are therefore shown as a 12-month estimate for your selected practice size. Some benchmarks may be unavailable when specialty/category volume is too low for stable percentiles or when category detail is incomplete in the benchmark inputs.

OUTCOMES

  • $700K annual savings by reducing bacterial antigen orders 57%

  • 10X efficiency gains in order set review processes

  • Streamlined workflows by retiring redundant order sets
